Valentino: The Last Emperor CityNews.ca Pick of the Week An excellent documentary on the legendary fashion designer Valentino. Funny and eye-opening even for someone not into fashion. Special features include The Perfect Life: Around the World with Valentino, The Last Collection and A Red Dress. Also available on Blu-ray. Film **** out of 5 stars. DVD **** out of 5 stars.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – In case you missed it in the theatre or when it was leaked online you can now watch it on DVD (unless you have something better to do like, say, clean the dishes). The problem with the film is that it skims past the actual origin of Wolverine and becomes just another X-Men movie only without the characters we like. Sitting through it once was bad and twice was torture. Special features include The Roots of Wolverine, director commentary and deleted scenes. Also available on Blu-ray. Film ** out of 5 stars. DVD ** out of 5 stars.

Harper’s Island: The DVD Edition – When it aired on television I got into the first three episodes of Harper’s Island and then couldn’t take it anymore. Not because the show is bad (it’s quite good actually) but because this is a show meant to be watched on DVD. The show spans a week leading up to a wedding on the fictional Harper’s Island and each episode a different character dies. Playing the “who is the killer” game is nerve-wracking over a television season but on DVD you can blow throw it in a weekend and it’s much more enjoyable. Special features include commentaries, webisodes, deleted scenes and a making-of. DVD **** out of 5 stars.

Parks and Recreation Season 1Disclaimer: Although Parks and Recreation airs on Citytv my review is completely independent. It took me a few episodes before I got into Parks and Recreation – a show about government employees trying to get a public park built in a local neighbourhood. I’m a huge fan of Amy Poehler though and I really wanted to like it. And then episode four aired and it just clicked – I love this show! The first season only has six episodes and the DVD is pretty vanilla but if you want to laugh pick it up. Special features include commentaries, deleted scenes and an extended cut of the season finale. DVD *** out of 5 stars.

The Informers – Based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel The Informers is one dreary, horrible excuse of a movie about sex, drugs and the 80s. The film left me lifeless and I never want to see it again. Starring Billy Bob Thorton, Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder and Mickey Rourke. Special features include a director and cast commentary and a making-of. Film * out of 5 stars. DVD * out of 5 stars.

More New DVD releases: An American Werewolf in London (Blu-ray), Deep Impact (Blu-ray), A Hard Day’s Night (Blu-ray), Army of Darkness (Blu-ray). Fringe: The Complete First Season, The Office: Season Five
