A father and stepmother convicted of second-degree murder in their young son’s death have asked for a new trial.
Randal Dooley was just seven years old when he died. The young boy weighed only 40 pounds. An autopsy found 13 broken ribs, a lacerated liver, and a tooth in his stomach. He was covered in bruises.
But that wasn’t the cause of death. Randay died of a brain injury likely caused by repeated shaking in September of 1998.
Marcia and Edward “Tony” Dooley were sentenced to life in prison in 2002, with Marcia having no chance of parole for 18 years and Tony no chance of parole for 13 years.
On Monday, their lawyers pleaded their case to Ontario’s Appeal Court. Both Dooleys have asked to have their convictions overturned, and Marcia is appealing her sentence.
