Police are trying to determine if a van involved in a fatal crash at Kennedy and Ellesmere roads Tuesday morning was attempting to flee from a previous fender bender when it lost control and smashed into a concrete median.
The minivan burst into flames around 7:15am.
The passenger, 39, was killed while the driver, 27, was trapped in the vehicle.
The driver was eventually freed by emergency crews and rushed to hospital with head injuries and a broken jaw. He remains at Sunnybrook in serious condition.
“The passenger was ejected from the vehicle, and the driver was pinned to the steering wheel, the vehicle was on fire. I saw the smoke and called 911 right away,” said witness Keysha Salter.
A passing truck driver pulled over and extinguished the flames, likely saving the driver from further injury.
The eastbound 401 ramp to Kennedy Road in Scarborough was closed as Toronto Police investigated. It has since reopened.
In the meantime, investigators are still trying to figure out all the details.
“We don’t know why the driver allegedly fled a possible collision and littler earlier, but that was a minor collision, and if that’s the case, keep it as a minor circumstance, never escalate it to something like this,” advised Sgt. Tim Burrows.
