Leafs’ Van Ryn To Undergo Season-Ending Knee Surgery

The already-weathered Maple Leafs defence took another hit Friday with word Mike Van Ryn will undergo season-ending knee surgery Oct. 22.

Van Ryn will have his knee realigned, meaning the bruising blueliner will be available for a return to the ice in six months at the earliest.

The 30-year-old, acquired in a trade that sent Bryan McCabe to the Florida Panthers, is in the second last year of his deal with the Leafs.

In a rather frustrating stretch with the Buds, Van Ryn’s played in only 27 games, having undergone two knee surgeries in which swelling in the joint never subsided.

With Van Ryn on long-term injury layoff, the $2.9 million he is due to make this season was not counting toward the team’s salary cap.
