TORONTO, Ont. – University Avenue is one step closer to getting bike lanes as the city of Toronto public works committee has passed a motion for a pilot project to taking place this summer.
Both northbound and southbound lanes along University will have bike lanes added in the centre of the street with barriers that separate them from other traffic.
Don Valley East city Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong told 680News the city does not need to add bike lanes, they need to connect the existing ones and create a system.
“One of the problems with university avenues, the bike lane, is that if you travel down it and you get down to Richmond Street and then it comes to a screeching halt and you’ve have no where to go. We need a bike lane system where people can travel conveniently where there are hook ups and networks where you’re not left stranded.” said Minnan-Wong.
According to the city, University is just one of many streets that will get bike lanes; Danforth Avenue and Jarvis Street are also being considered.
Sgt. Tim Burrows with Toronto Traffic Services told 680News motorists will have to get used to more bikes on our roads, “Society truly is looking at the bicycle, not just as a conveyance but truly a mode of transportation, and to accept that, we have to embrace that the infrastructure is going to have to change and we’re going to have to make more room for cycles”
The 12 week pilot project is expected to begin some time after the G-20 summit and will be completed in September.
