Two Separate Fires Leave One Dead, One In Critical Condition

One man is dead after a house fire in the Dufferin and Dupont St. area Saturday night.
Firefighters were called to 102 Lapin Ave around 9:30 p.m., with smoke coming out of the back of a two-storey house.
When emergency crews arrived on the scene, they discovered a man with no vital signs. They couldn’t resuscitate him.
The building is divided up into apartments, and the blaze was contained to a single unit. Firefighters were able to work and put out the fire quickly, but what started it isn’t known.
Toronto Fire says this building did have working smoke alarms.
An early morning fire in the city’s east end Sunday has left one woman in critical condition in Sunnybrook Hospital.
At around 6 a.m., firefighters were called to 1021 Birchmount Rd., a highrise apartment building.
Crews pulled a woman out of a ninth floor apartment. She suffered burns to her face, chest and arms.
The Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze. At this point, damage has been estimated at $30, 000.
