Animal lovers stage mock funeral protest against the OSPCA

Animal lovers are gathering in the GTA, Sunday, for a mock funeral to remember the animals put down by the OSPCA.

People dressed in black carrying empty pet carriers and dog-less leashes gathered outside the Newmarket OSPCA to honour the dead animals.  A row of crosses, a small coffin and photos of some of the euthanized pets were also on display as mourners held a mock funeral in memory of the dead animals.

Sharon was volunteer at the shelter and tells 680 News people have shown up because of their love of the animals. “We are all here for the animals, the current animals who are in the shelter, but also for the future animals the shelter will hopefully house”

The mock funeral is in protest to the killing of 99 animals due to a ringworm outbreak the OSPCA’s Newmarket shelter.

Animals lovers are also gathering outside Queen’s Park on the north lawn.  The rally’s are expected to last until 6pm.

Some are also meeting at a Richmond Hill park where an OSPCA fundraiser had been set for Sunday, but has since been cancelled.

Protest organizers are asking people who are planning to attend to wear black, in remembrance of the animals lost.
