Bear attack possibly a case of mistaken identity

PENETANGUISHENE – The natural resources ministry said Tuesday’s attack on a 47 year old Penetanguishene man was most likely a case of mistaken identity.

The man was dressed in camouflage and hip waders at the time, and was bending over when the attack happened, possibly leading the bear to believe he was a deer, or another animal that would be considered food.

The victim’s wife said her husband was scouting hunting grounds on the remote piece of crown land, when the large black bear approached and attacked him.

Three trailer traps have been set to catch the animal, and experts have even collected its DNA from the scene to compare it to any bear which may be caught.

Officials are beginning to wind down the search, but technicians will continue to check the traps daily until next week.
