Bill Proposes Listing Calorie Counts on Menus

When you eat out, do you really have an idea how many calories you’re consuming?

The NDP’s health critic France Gelinas introduced a private member’s bill Wednesday, calling for calorie counts to be posted on menus in chain restaurants.

The plan would target restaurants with at least five locations and a minimum of $5 million in annual revenue. They would be required to post the calories for any food and drink served on their menus.

The proposal is already getting kudos from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, Toronto Public Health and the Canadian Diabetes Association.

25 U.S. states already have similar measures in place, as part of President Barack Obama’s health reform.
