LEAMINGTON, Ont – Environment Canada is preparing a new Doppler radar system to help detect tornados.
Federal minister of state Gary Goodyear made the announcement while surveying tornado damage in Leamington on Wednesday.
Goodyear said the new system could detect storms higher up in the atmosphere and provide dangerous weather warnings earlier.
He told 680News that they are “always looking for the latest and greatest technologies,” and would like to improve the current 45 minute warning time.
Sunday’s storm spawned an F1 tornado that knocked out power and carved a path of destruction through the southwestern Ontario town.
Hydro crews had restored power to most of the Leamington area by Wednesday. Municipal officials were considering lifting the state of emergency.
