Free Parking List Revealed

One month ago, city councillor Howard Moscoe told the Toronto Sun of a secret City Hall list that contained the names of people, services and streets exempt from parking tickets, which bring in an about $75 million dollars a year.

Now, the 18-page booklet has been made public.

Delivery vehicles, nursing agencies, tour buses, taxicabs, disabled drivers and armoured cars don’t pay the fines.

City councillors, too, are eligible for freebies if they’re on city business, the Parking Ticket Cancellation Guidelines reveals.

You could also get a free pass if you’re living more than 100 kilometres from Toronto, attending a religious service, having a medical excuse and being confused about what side of the street on which to park.

“Some of the rules are absurd,” Moscoe admitted.

The City of Toronto issued a statement following the release of the list.

“Established guidelines help staff make informed, consistent decisions about parking ticket cancellations,” it read in part.

“City staff at parking ticket counters review each disputed ticket and the evidence presented to understand the nature of the infraction and the circumstances surrounding the ticket issued, and to determine whether a cancellation is warranted.”
