New technology comes to FIFA

TORONTO, Ont – For the first time ever the FIFA World Cup games are being broadcast using next-generation 3D technology.

Last year FIFA announced a media rights agreement with Sony, an official FIFA partner, to deliver the 3D images from up to 25 matches.

“I compare it to the difference in colour and black and white,” Toronto Star Sports Media Critic Chris Zelkovich said.

But that’s not the only big change Zelkovich said soccer fans should expect. Watching the games online have also been providing more to enjoy.

“You can get some different players and you can get some other interesting camera angles that may or may not make their way onto television,” he said.

He said many of the games should get high ratings despite the early broadcast times – approximately 7,000 viewers per game, depending on how the tournament goes, he said.

Sony Pictures Entertainment will produce and distribute the official 3D film of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa after the games.
