Japan Beats Cameroon 1-0

Hopes were high for Cameroon Monday, but the team couldn’t muster a win against Japan, which is now tied with the Netherlands in Group E with three points at the World Cup.

Japanese striker Keisuke Honda easily put his team’s only goal past Cameroon’s netminder in the 39th minute, giving the squad its first World Cup victory on foreign soil. Japan’s two previous World Cup victories happened in 2002 when it co-hosted the event with South Korea.

Cameroon had its first attempt just two minutes before the Japanese goal, but the team wasn’t able to penetrate Japan’s defence and its goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima. Striker Samuel Etoo wasn’t able to generate a rhythm with his teammates through most of the game, but the team nearly tied things up in the 87th minute.

Earlier Monday, the Netherlands beat Denmark 2-0. Italy takes on Paraguay Monday afternoon in Group F action.
