No More Middle Lane On Jarvis

Motorists long accustomed to an extra lane on Jarvis Street had a surprise on Monday morning: The reversible centre is gone.
Depending on the time of day, drivers either had an extra north- or southbound lane. Now, the five lanes have dwindled to four.
The centre lane was eliminated to make way for two bike lanes, one on either side of the street, that will run from Charles Street to Queen Street.
City of Toronto workers began the $65,000 project on Friday and they should be finished by the end of the month.
Street parking will also be eliminated in an effort to make Jarivs more friendly for pedestrians.
The project has been in the works for over a year. It was approved by city council in May 2009.
Planned Work
Friday, July 16
Remove pay-and-display parking machines and install no-stopping regulations on the roadway.
Remove centre reversible lane
Saturday, July 17 or Sunday, July 18 (weather permitting)
Install temporary pavement markings to indicate the closure of the centre lane. This work will take place during the evening.
Week of July 19
Pre-mark bike lanes and remove reversible lane hardware and signs.
Saturday, July 24 and/or Sunday, July 25 (weather permitting)
Rolling closures of parts of Jarvis to install new bike lane markings and remove existing markings.
Week of July 26
The bicycle and diamond symbols will be installed in the bike lanes. Some curb lane closures in off-peak hours.
