US apologizes for STD study in Guatemala

The US government is apologizing for experiments that took place about sixty years ago in Guatemala.
Doctors in the States intentionally injected hundreds of Guatemalans with Syphilis and Gonorrhea during a two-year long experiment in the 1940s.
U.S. health officials wanted to learn if penicillin could be used not only to treate STD’s – but to prevent them.
The subjects were mostly male prisoners and females from mental institutions.
As part of the study, many of those infected with the STD’s were encouraged to pass the infection onto others.
About one third of those who were infected never got proper treatment.
