‘Hurricane Hazel’ faces her opponents in back-to-back debates

TORONTO, Ont. – Things are heating up in the Mississauga mayoral race.
Incumbent Mayor Hazel McCallion has participated in not one, but two debates this week.
McCallion has taken part in all-candidates meetings in the past, but what she hasn’t done since 1982 is taken part in mayoral debates in which she’s challenged by her competition.
“Most of these are not serious candidates and Hazel McCallion is still by far the leading candidate in this election,” Tom Urbaniak, the author of Her Worship: Hazel McCallion and the Development of Mississauga, told 680News.
“No one is doubting the result on Oct. 25th, but the dynamic is very different. She is feeling the heat this time.”
Urbaniak said while McCallion will easily win, she’s unlikely to get more than 90 per cent voter support this time around.
He said McCallion has had tremendous preemptive power over the years, but that may fizzle with her new council.
Urbaniuk doubts the people of the city will heed her call to elect a compliant council.
