Authorities in Durham Region are warning residents to be extra cautious about how they store and dispose of garbage.
Two separate black bear sightings were reported Monday in Clarington and in both cases, the animals were sniffing around for food.
Durham Regional Police said one bear was spotted Monday afternoon near Courtice Road north of Nash Road. The second bear was eating garbage inside a shed around Westmore Street.
Authorities are advising residents to:
- Store garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids
- Only put garbage out the morning of pick-up
- Clean garbage containers frequently
- Remove bird feeders. Only use them during the winter months.
- Clean outdoor grills after every use.
If you see a bear, call the Ministry of Natural Resources bear reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 or Durham Police at 1-888-579-1520. You can also call 911.
