Bixi Fulfills Membership Requirement

Bike sharing is returning to Toronto.

The effort to bring the Montreal-based Bixi bikes to Toronto has succeeded with the company collecting the 1,000 memberships needed to secure the program’s spot in the city.

The Toronto Star reports car sharing company AutoShare bought up the final 100 $95 one-year memberships. Bixi had to meet the 1,000 memberships by Nov. 30.

The program is set to launch in Toronto next May with 80 stations around the downtown core. The service will run all year. The first 30 minutes are free for members and you pay a charge for any time over that.

The Bixi bike sharing program is used in several cities, including Montreal, Washington D.C., London, Paris and Melbourne.
