Just before midnight on Oct. 16, officers responded to a plaza near Steeles Avenue, just west of Warden, where they learned two men had been stabbed in a fight outside New Century Chinese Restaurant.
Friends had taken the victims, both from Newmarket, to hospital. One of them, 28-year-old Vandin Svay, died there of his injuries. The other, a 24-year-old man, had been critically injured, but survived.
On Friday, homicide detectives arrested Kimsan Heang, 27, and charged him with first-degree murder and attempted murder. He appeared in a Newmarket court on Saturday.
Four other suspects – Sinhem Srun, 32, Meng Ly Lim, 28, Cho Chea, 24, and Veasna Sam, 30 – were arrested last month. They are due to appear again in court over the next two weeks.
