Rob Ford Will Be Mayor In A Week, Big Issues On The Early Agenda

A week Wednesday Rob Ford will be sworn in as Toronto’s mayor and he has some ambitious plans for his first few weeks in office.

A report in the Globe and Mail suggests Ford plans to tackle some big issues early on. Council meetings on Dec. 7 and 8th are expected to deal with general house keeping, including filling committee positions. Ford is expected to announce the key players in his team Friday.

On Dec. 16 Ford has a full agenda planned, which reportedly includes dumping the $60 vehicle registration tax, slashing councillors’ office budgets by $20,000 a year and a call to rein-in spending next year.

Ford has reportedly chosen former Etobicoke mayor Doug Holyday to be his deputy mayor. Frances Nunziata will be named council speaker, Mike Del Grande has reportedly been appointed budget chief and Karen Stinz as TTC Chair.

The mayor-elect has also, according to reports, appointed an arts adviser and is trying to quell fears that he’ll cut arts funding.

Jeff Melanson, executive director of the National Ballet School, will counsel Ford on arts and culture issues.
