Homeowners, Tenants Burned For False Fire Alarms

Approximately 800 people have received hefty fines of more than $1,000 for false alarms that brought firefighters to their homes.

Back in April city council stopped allowing residents one false alarm per year, at the request of Toronto Fire Services. Since then, 1,100 have received notices of fines, the Toronto Star reports, and 800 have had to cough up the cash.

Most of the fines were $1,050.

Some homeowners have argued against the move, claiming it deters people from using life-saving devices from alarm companies.

Toronto Fire Services says the move was aimed at cutting down on nuisance and malicious calls.
