Toronto Could Scrap Pet Licenses: Report

Toronto could scrap its pet licensing program, according to a report in the Globe and Mail.

The initiative, which requires residents to register their cats and dogs, misses the majority of the city’s pets.

In fact, just 10 per cent of cats and 30 per cent of dogs are tagged.

Licensing costs the city about $2 million to run and brings in $2.5 million.  It’s supposed to make it easier to return pets if they go missing, but many owners don’t participate in the program.

A report on the merits of the program will be presented to city staff later this month.
