The B.C. Lions announced Wednesday they have signed defensive back Davis Sanchez to a contract extension through the 2013 season.
“Davis is a valuable member of our secondary and gives us a number of options on defence,” Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono said. “He was a great addition last season and his experience and leadership helped us to grow as a team.”
The Delta, B.C. native, who has played nine seasons in the CFL, signed with the Lions as a free agent on Feb. 9 last year after asking for his release from the Montreal Alouettes.
“It was a tremendous honour to sign with my hometown team last year and I am equally pleased to sign this extension today,” said Sanchez. “We have a great combination of youth and experience in our locker room and I am excited to be part of a team that has the potential to win a championship at home in front of our fans this November.”
Davis appeared in 15 games last year, recording 37 tackles, two interceptions and six pass knockdowns before being sidelined with a dislocated elbow versus the Edmonton Eskimos in Week 16.
He previously played for the Eskimos and the Calgary Stampeders as well as two years for the San Diego Chargers of the NFL.
NOTES: The Eskimos have signed Canadian free agent defensive back Donovan Alexander, who spent the past two seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. “Donovan has been a two-year starting corner in this league and both Kavis Reed and I believe that at age 25 he has plenty of upside,” Eskimos general manager Eric Tillman said.
