Mammoliti pushes for red-light district on Toronto Islands

TORONTO, Ont. – Controversial Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti is using his new clout as a member of the mayor’s inner circle to renew his call for a red-light district to be established on the Toronto Islands.

Mammoliti said he would start at the Hanlan’s Point nude beach, perhaps install blinking red signs and give the area a flashy new name.

“If you think there’s not prostitution going on there (already) we’ve got our head in the sand,” said Mammoliti, “You could call it Sin Island, you can call it whatever you want. The reality is that if you did something like this the economy down here would skyrocket.”

He told 680News he believes the area would draw boats from the United States to the Island and bring as much as $100-million into the economy.

“If you associate a tax with it, it would come directly to the city of Toronto.”

Councillor Pam McConnell told 680News she thinks Mammoliti needs to think before he speaks.

“Clearly he’s going into a new profession of comedy, because (his ideas) are bordering now on the absurd,” said McConnell, “He should go back to taking his shirt off again because he’s making a joke of himself.”
