Gas prices jump nearly five cents a litre

Drivers all across southern Ontario woke up to an unpleasant surprise on Saturday: gas prices jumped nearly five cents a litre over night.

“It’s disgusting. We should have all the politicians come and say their two cents about the price of gas. Everybody keeps quiet when it’s rising and no one speaks at the debates or when they come to your door,” said John, who filled up on Friday night.

On average, the price at the pumps jumped from 124.6 cents a litre to 129.5 for regular, unleaded gas. Diesel prices, meanwhile, remained unchanged at 129.9 cents a litre.

Motorists in the GTA, Hamilton, Kitchener, London, Barrie, and Peterborough all took a hit to the wallet. And in Montreal, gas prices soared to just under $1.36 a litre.

CityNews spoke to several Toronto residents who made it to the gas station just under the wire on Friday night.

“I think it’s crazy. People are struggling. I can hardly fill up my tank – it’s killing me right now,” Miguel said.

“It’s ridiculous,” Bonnie Benitez added.  “But what can you do? You need to get to work and everywhere else.”

Oil ended the week at a two and a half year high on the world markers – just under $108 US a barrel.
