Metro Square to be renamed after late Luminato founder

Metro Square – the park area on King Street West between Metro Hall and Roy Thomson Hall – will be renamed David Pecaut Square, honouring the late city-building maverick.

Mayor Rob Ford made the official announcement Friday at the square.

Pecaut was a respected civic leader and volunteer. He worked on projects ranging from the Greater Toronto Civic Action Alliance, the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council and co-founded the Luminato festival.

Pecaut also volunteered to fundraise for the home of the Toronto International Film Festival, the TIFF Bell Lightbox.

Pecaut passed away in 2009 at the age of 54 after battling cancer.

Officials say they are aiming to have the square officially renamed by June in time for Luminato.
