Liberal MPP Tony Ruprecht says he won’t run again in the October provincial election.
“It’s time to use my experience in another capacity,” the MPP for Davenport said in a release Tuesday.
Ruprecht, who is the longest-serving member of the Ontario legislature from the Greater Toronto Area, is the latest Liberal MPP to decide not to run in the Oct. 6 election.
In March, Gerry Phillips said he wouldn’t seek re-election. Speaker Steve Peters, deputy speaker Bruce Crozier, government house leader Monique Smith and members Pat Hoy and Jim Brownell have said they are retiring from politics.
Ruprecht said the sudden death of his colleague, Bruce Crozier, “shocked him” into reconsidering another run.
The politician has been re-elected 10 times, the first time in 1981 in the riding of Parkdale-High Park. He has represented the Davenport riding since 2003.
Ruprecht has served as Minister of Citizenship Responsible for Multiculturalism and as Minister for Disabled Persons. He is a member of the cabinet committee on health, education and social policy.
He said he will pursue his personal spiritual goals and publish his research in a book called Radiant Health: The Power of Anti-Aging Emotions.
