Major League Baseball announced Sunday that pitchers Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox and Ricky Romero of the Toronto Blue Jays have been added to the American League All-Star roster.
Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez, who started Sunday’s game, will be inactive for Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic, in accordance with the rule that makes Sunday’s starting pitchers ineligible to pitch in Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic.
Hernandez, who will attend the All-Star Game, was a player-elected All-Star. Thus, his replacement was to be the next highest ranking pitcher who was not already an All-Star. Lester was the next highest ranked pitcher, but because he is currently on the disabled list, Romero has been added to the roster and will be active for Tuesday’s game.
This is the second All-Star selection of Lester’s career, having also been selected last year. He is 10-4 with a 3.31 ERA in his 18 starts on the season. Lester will attend the All-Star Game with full honors and will be introduced before the Midsummer Classic. Romero, 26, is now an All-Star for the first time in his three-year Major League career. The Cal State Fullerton product is 7-8 with a 3.09 ERA and 101 strikeouts in his 18 starts on the season. He has three complete games, including one shutout.
Other announcements regarding the All-Star rosters will be made as they become available.
