Saskatoon SPCA determining fate of dogs that ate their dead owners

A Saskatchewan woman and an animal protection group are at odds over whether several dogs that ate the remains of their dead owners should be put down or adopted.

The dogs belonged to a couple who died earlier this month in their home near Springside in eastern Saskatchewan.

It was a couple of weeks before their bodies were found and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says the seven dogs resorted to eating their owners’ remains to survive.

Saskatoon SPCA shelter director Tiffiny Koback says the dogs are being assessed for adoption.

But Neighbour Margaret-Ann Irving, who is a dog breeder, says the animals have long had behaviour problems that included biting.

Irving believes the dogs could harm children in a new home and should be killed.
