Hosni Mubarak stable after reports of coma

The lead doctor for Hosni Mubarak denied that the former Egyptian president had suffered a stroke and was in a coma, as his lawyer claimed.

Dr. Assem Azzam said Mubarak, 83, had only suffered a bout of low blood pressure and was in stable condition at a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Earlier Sunday, Mubarak’s lawyer Farid el-Deeb told Reuters news agency that he was on his way to Sharm el-Sheikh after learning Mubarak was in a coma.

Mubarak was being treated at a hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh two months after he was ousted Feb. 11 by a popular uprising that lasted nearly three weeks in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and other parts of Egypt.

He is scheduled to face a trial on Aug. 3. over allegations he ordered the killing of protesters during the mass demonstrations against his 30-year-old regime.

A conviction could carry the death penalty and activists suspect his lawyer may be using health problems as a ruse to sway public opinion and perhaps even win amnesty.
