Report says hike coming for city user fees

It could soon be more expensive to sign up for popular city-run sports and recreational classes with staff planning to recommend a hike in user fees.

City manager Joe Pennachetti told the Toronto Star he will ask council to approve a hike of any fees judged discretionary by KPMG – the consulting firm the city hired to perform a separate review of core services.

Pennachetti said an adult swim class or a piano class might be targeted; sports and arts classes for children less so.

A city official said the review is in its early stages and staff is also looking for new areas to introduce user fees.

Fees are similar in Mississauga and Brampton, but are as much as a third higher in other municipalities.
