There are an estimated 1.5-million people in Ontario over the age of 16 who don’t have a driver’s licence and therefore don’t have a photo ID card.
After a three-year wait, Ontario, as of Monday, is selling a new photo ID card, available for anyone over the age of 16 who doesn’t have a driver’s licence.
At a cost of $35, the new photo ID card is valid for five years.
It’s wallet-sized, mauve in colour and has raised lettering in spots and clearly states it is not a driver’s licence.
Transportation Minister Kathleen Wynne told 680News it was kept simple for a reason.
“For more enhanced cards, the cost would have been much, much higher,” Wynne explained. “What the advocates said to us was we need this very basic card.”
It was first intended to be a passport substitute but Wynne said that path became too pricey. It can’t be used as a substitute for a passport if you’re leaving the country.
The card is available at 21 Service Ontario centres as of Monday, and at all 300 locations next year.
All the details are available on the Ministry of Transportation’s Ontario photo card FAQ page.
