Pro-football-player-turned-actor Bubba Smith found dead

Forensic investigators are deciding whether to conduct an autopsy on Hollywood actor and former pro football player Bubba Smith, after he was found dead Wednesday in his Los Angeles area home.

Smith’s body was discovered by a caretaker, according to police. Early indications are that he died of natural causes. He was 66 years old.

Smith first shot to fame as an NFL defensive tackle, joining the Baltimore Colts in 1967. He played five seasons in Baltimore before playing for both the Oakland Raiders and the Houston Oilers. A knee injury ended his career in 1976.

After his football career ended, Smith did commercial work, before playing Moses Hightower in six Police Academy movies. He also appeared in a number of TV series, including Half-Nelson, Blue Thunder and Good Times.

Smith was last seen in 2010’s Blood River.
