EI rates hold steady in June after 8 months of decline

The number of people receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits held steady in June following eight months of decline.

Statistics Canada says nationally 577,400 are receiving EI benefits, only 100 more than in May.

The number of beneficiaries is down in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia, with Newfoundland and Labrador and Manitoba recorded increases.

Statistics Canada says most large centres in Canada showed year-over-year declines in the number of people receiving regular benefits.

The number of people making claims for EI showed a small decrease.

The largest percentage decrease occurred in Newfoundland and Labrador.
