Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic’s funeral to be held Wednesday

A funeral will be held Wednesday for the retired archbishop of Toronto, Aloysius Cardinal Ambrozic who died last week after a lengthy illness.

Ambrozic served as the ninth archbishop of Toronto from 1990 to 2006. He died at the age of 81, after a battle with the brain disorder progressive supranuclear palsy.

Visitation is being held at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Cathedral on Tuesday afternoon and evening, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Office for the Dead (evening prayer service) will be held at 8:30 p.m.

The funeral service will begin with a mass at St. Michael’s Cathedral. Due to renovations, there is limited public seating.

Ambrozic was a priest for 56 years. For 35 of those years, he served as a bishop.

In January 1998, Pope John Paul II nominated Ambrozic as a cardinal, allowing him to take part in the 2005 election of Pope Benedict XVI.
