Chemical spill causes building evacuation on Charles Street

TORONTO, Ont. – Emergency crews remain on scene after they receive a call about a suspected chemical spill on Charles Street, between Yonge Street and Church Street.

A building at 42 Charles has been evacuated as a precaution.

Toronto Fire told 680News two movers on 5th floor of the building were transporting a cabinet when they knocked over chemical bottles. The movers then reported eye irritation.

Further investigation revealed a larger spill which was producing vapour.  Authorities were concerned the compound was nitrogen triiodide, which is explosive.

Crews worked with CANUTEC, a government agency with chemical engineers, to remove the bottles and examine the contents.

Authorities concluded the vapour was not producing nitrogen triiodide but would not say what the bottles contained.

A private company has been called in to clean up the spill.

The street has been closed off while crews continue the clean up.
