Ontarians who drive vehicles that are seven years or older will get a break as changes to the province’s Drive Clean emissions test program take effect Thursday.
The emissions test required at registration renewal every two years once a car, light truck or bus is five years old will no longer be necessary until the vehicles hit seven years or older.
The change will save motorists about $30 plus tax as well as the time it takes to have the vehicle tested.
Other changes to the Drive Clean program will eliminate the test for drivers who buy a car after having leased it, when there’s a transfer between family members and for any vehicle renewing its registration after passing a test in the previous year.
Vehicles that are plated historic will now be exempt from Drive Clean.
The province said improved technology and vehicle maintenance make testing at seven years as effective as testing at five years old.
Since starting in 1999, the Drive Clean program has reduced smog-causing pollutants by an estimated 266,000 tonnes, the province said.
