Edmonton salon vandalized after ad controversy

An Edmonton hair salon that has come under intense scrutiny for an ad many say is sensationalizing domestic violence has been vandalized.

Fluid Hair Salon was spray-painted bright pink and purple between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with a message pasted to one window saying “That was violence wrongly named Art.”

The ad in question features a young woman with long, frizzy hair and a black eye sitting on a couch. Behind her, a man is standing holding what appears to be an expensive necklace. The tag line reads: “Look good in all you do.”

Several women’s groups, including the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters and the Edmonton Women’s Shelter, have spoken out against the ad.

Fluid’s owner, Sarah Cameron, defended the ad in a press release earlier this week.

“Is it cutting-edge advertising? Yes. Is it intended to be a satirical look at real-life situations that ignites conversation and debate? Of course. Is it to everyone’s taste? Probably not.”

Cameron added she had no intention of making light of domestic violence.
