Alberta’s own Nickelback was soundly booed during a Detroit Lions game on Thursday.
The band played the halftime show in the Thanksgiving game against the Green Bay Packers — an honour that some argue should have gone to a local act.
“Nickelback from Alberta, Canada. Good pick, because Detroit apparently not blessed with any music tradition of its own,” ESPN’s Buster Onley wrote on Twitter (scroll down to read through some other tweets).
An online petition requesting the band not play received 55,616 signatures on change.org, but Nickelback took it in stride, poking fun at their critics in a recent funnyordie.com video.
The real test for the band will be the home country fans on Sunday: Nickelback is scheduled to play at the Grey Cup.
