Nearly one year after a vacation went terribly wrong, an Ajax teacher recently acquitted of trying to murder his wife returned home Wednesday night.
“I’m happy to be home, absolutely. Happy to be home,” Paul Martin told CityNews.
Paul Martin, 43, was accused of slashing Cathy Lee Martin’s throat while the couple was on vacation in Jamaica last December.
He had been held in a Jamaican prison and had surrendered his passport during the trial.
“It was inhumane. It was inhumane. I want to try and forget that.
And while Martin has been acquitted, his wife says she fears for her safety.
“I’m scared. Everyone is scared. My husband pretends to be a perfect man and I can tell you as of December 23rd when he did this to me (points to throat), he became a different man,” said Cathy Lee Martin upon news of his acquittal last week.
Martin denies any history of violence.
“I’ve never ever harmed by wife, never tried to harm my wife, and I never tried to harm my wife that day.”
His lawyers argued that his wife was injured in a struggle she had started.
Now, he says his priority is re-establishing his relationship with his children.
“The most important thing to me is to get back to my children and be their daddy.”
Martin previously taught Grades 5 and 6 at St. Francis de Sales school in Ajax and is also the brother of well-known Victoria-area MP Dr. Keith Martin.
