Durham College student faces charges after handgun found at school

A Durham College student is facing a slew of charges after police say they found a gun in his backpack at the school Tuesday.

Durham Regional Police were called to a classroom at Durham College shortly before noon on Tuesday, responding what they describe as a “weapons-related incident.”

Investigators say several students noticed a backpack left behind in an empty classroom. When police opened it, they discovered and seized a loaded .45 calibre handgun and ammunition.

No one was injured during the incident.

Police found Dominic Chong, 25, of Ajax at his home later in the day and arrested him without incident. He was charged with the following:

  • possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition.
  • possession of a weapon obtained by the commission of an offence.
  • careless storage of a firearm.
  • possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized.
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm.
