Union and city set to finalize tentative deal

After hopefully getting a good night’s sleep, union and city officials will sit down at 9 a.m. Monday to finalize the wording of the new tentative deal.

A tentative deal was reached Sunday between the City of Toronto and the union representing its 6,000 outside workers. The deal avoids a possible strike or lockout.

Just based on the remarks of mayor Rob Ford and his deputy Doug Holyday, it would seem the union made concessions on the so-called ‘jobs for life’ clause.

Holyday said the deal will give the city more flexible control over the workforce, that’s what they wanted. And it sounds like what CUPE 416 president Mark Ferguson gave.

“I would suggest this was the toughest labour negotiations in Canadian history,” Holyday said.

Holyday thinks these talks will set the tone for upcoming discussions with three other local unions.
