Toronto police are investigating after a TTC collector was shot in the neck at Dupont Station.
The man, believed to be in his 50s, was shot during an attempted robbery around 7:20 p.m. Sunday, TTC officials tell CityNews.
“Our chief concern is with our employee,” spokesperson Brad Ross said.
He was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital in serious condition, Toronto EMS said. No one else was reported injured.
During the robbery, the employee pressed the alarm inside his booth, bringing emergency crews to the station.
Ross said there are closed-circuit cameras at the booth, and all images will be turned over to police.
“My first priority is our staff’s safety,” TTC’s acting chief general manager Andy Byford said outside the hospital.
“I will not have our staff attacked in this way. It’s disgraceful.” Byford said he would be holding a special meting on employee safety Monday.
Police are looking for a suspect described as a white male.
Dupont Station was closed until the end of service Sunday night. Trains were bypassing the station, but service was expected to resume Monday morning.
“I’m deeply saddened to learn what occurred at the Dupont Subway station,” Mayor Rob Ford said in a statement.
“I would like to extend my thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of the TTC collector during this most difficult time.”
