Freezing rain prompts several school bus cancellations

Slippery road conditions continued Thursday morning, prompting several school bus cancellations as freezing rain hit parts of the GTA and south central Ontario.
Environment Canada issued its second freezing rain warning in as many days early Thursday, warning of slick conditions for the morning commute. The warning, which has since ended, stretched from the Waterloo area over to Peterborough and covered Peel, Halton, York and Durham regions.
Several school boards, including York Region and Simcoe County, cancelled bus service Thursday morning.
At one point Thursday morning, the OPP was urging drivers to delay heading out on the road until the bad weather passed.
“First thing this morning we were faced with [a number of] collisions … they were all minor type of collisions — vehicles in the ditch,” OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford said.
“We were really advising motorists if they didn’t have to go out there to stay off the roads until we could get them cleaned up.”
Freezing rain prompted authorities to shut down part of Highway 400 Wednesday evening and the poor weather may have been a factor in a crash that claimed a man’s life on Highway 115 in Clarington.
