Fresh off the announcement that the organization will be holding UFC 149 in Calgary, sources informed Sportsnet that a bantamweight matchup between Canadian Mitch (The Machine) Gagnon and American Bryan (Kid Lightning) Caraway will be the first official bout announced for the event.
Gagnon was originally schedule to make his Octagon debut on Jan. 28 as part of the UFC on FOX 2 card, but visa issues prevented him from doing so. He boasts an 8-1 record, with all victories coming by way of submission, and represents Team Shredder from Sudbury, Ont.
Caraway, who has competed three times under the Zuffa banner, boasts a 16-5 record, and is also widely considered a submission expert, with 14 of his victories coming by way of tap out.
UFC 149 is scheduled to take place at the Scotiabank Saddledome on July 21. It is expected the UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo Jr. will defend his title in the evening’s main event.
