Scrapyard fire near Old Weston Road & St. Clair West

Officials are trying to determine what caused the second scrapyard fire in four years near Old Weston Road and St. Clair Avenue West in the city’s west end.

Firefighters were called to a yard at 160 Union St. around 10:30 p.m. Thursday where up to 30 cars and a large pile of tires went up in flames. The fire reached three-alarm status with about 60 firefighters on scene.

The owner was at the site when the blaze started so he was able to provide assistance to firefighters by using heavy equipment to turn over the fires so the flames could be doused.

There’s no word yet on what caused the blaze. No injuries were reported.

This was the same area where there was a major scrapyard fire in 2008.
