TORONTO, Ont. – Beastie Boys rapper Adam Yauch, known as MCA, died at the age of 47, Friday.
His death comes three years after he announced to the world that he was undergoing cancer treatment.
If there was ever a hip hop/rap group that stood out in the music business, it was the trio from Brooklyn.
Yauch, along with Mike “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horowitz formed the Beastie Boys in 1979.
They wanted to be a punk-rock group before they experimented with hip hop. In 1986, they exploded onto the music scene with the album “License to Ill,” that included the hit “You Gotta Fight for your Right to Party.”
They were rude, crude, nasty and funny and their videos were considered very creative.
Yauch became a filmmaker and was involved in the “Free Tibet” movement.
He was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 after discovering a tumour in his salivary gland.
Before Yauch passed away, the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. The trio won three Grammy awards.
