Capacity of 2 Toronto islands ferries cut in half

People heading over to the Toronto islands this summer may want to pack some extra patience in their cooler now that ferry capacity has been slashed in half.

Thomas Rennie and Sam McBride, two double-decker ferries that shuttle people to the islands, can now only let 500 people on board, down from 975, due to Transport Canada restrictions.

The federal government started clamping down on the ferries, which have been in use since 1939 and 1951, after the city started retrofitting them. The upgrades to the boats mean they’re no longer protected from regulations by a grandfather clause.

Once crews block off certain areas of the upper levels, the ferries will be able to carry about 700 passengers — still well below the original capacity.
