MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The Highway 401 eastbound collector lanes have reopened between Highway 410 and Dixie Road following a fatal crash.
Also reopened: Highway 410 southbound ramp to the eastbound collectors, and Highway 403 eastbound ramp to the Highway 401 eastbound collectors.
A tractor-trailer was travelling eastbound on the 401 collectors approaching Dixie Road at around 2:15 a.m. when it was rear-ended by a black Lexus car, also heading eastbound.
“From preliminary investigation, we have the transport truck, as well as the car, travelling eastbound on the 401 in the collector lanes, and the car rear-ended the transport trailer,” OPP Const. Linda Wolf told 680News.
The car slammed into the tractor-trailer with such force that it was torn into pieces, and its driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
The impact of the crash left pieces of the Lexus, including the roof, embedded in the rear right corner of the tractor-trailer. The rest of the car came to a rest one lane over.
Police are investigating excessive speed, alcohol and driver distraction played as possible causes to the crash.
