Georgina street named after fallen officer

A Georgina street has officially been named after a fallen police officer.

York Regional Police Det. Const. Robert Plunkett was killed on Aug. 2, 2007, while making an arrest.

Officials, including chief Eric Jolliffe and Plunkett’s widow Sonja, formally recognized Robert Plunkett Drive at a ceremony on Tuesday afternoon.

Jolliffe praised Georgina’s mayor and council for the lovely gesture.

“We thank you, and it’s truly a moving tribute in the memory of Rob Plunkett,” he said.

The road is located near Woodbine Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard.

Plunkett was killed while he was trying to arrest Nadeem Jiwa, then 19, who was stealing vehicle airbags.

Jiwa accelerated in reverse in a stolen Honda and pinned the 43-year-old officer against a tree in Markham. Plunkett, a father of three teens, died of a severed aorta.

Jiwa was convicted of manslaughter in Plunkett’s death on June 29, 2011, and handed a 12-year prison term. He was acquitted of the more serious offence of first-degree murder.

Jiwa was given the 12-year sentence but received eight years credit for the three years and 11 months he spent in pre-sentence custody.
